John Stroeder graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1976, where he showcased his basketball talents, leading to a collegiate career at the University of Montana from 1976 to 1980. During his time at Montana, Stroeder was recognized as an All-Big Sky selection and amassed 564 rebounds over four seasons (RealGM Basketball, Wikipedia, Basketball Reference, ScholarWorks UM).
Selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 8th round of the 1980 NBA Draft, Stroeder's professional journey included stints with NBA teams such as the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, and Golden State Warriors during the late 1980s. Beyond the NBA, he played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and overseas, achieving a CBA championship with the Tampa Bay/Rapid City Thrillers in 1987 and earning All-CBA Second Team honors in 1989 (RealGM Basketball, Wikipedia). |
After concluding his playing career, Stroeder returned to Port Townsend, dedicating himself to coaching basketball at his alma mater. Over 13 years, he led both the girls' and boys' teams, guiding the boys' team to consecutive state semifinal appearances and Olympic League championships in 2008 and 2009. His tenure was marked by a commitment to developing young athletes and fostering a culture of teamwork and excellence (Peninsula Daily News).
John Stroeder's enduring contributions to basketball, both as a player and coach, have left a lasting legacy in Port Townsend. |
