Joan O'Meara devoted her life to dance, shaping generations of performers and enriching the cultural fabric of Port Townsend through 64 years of extraordinary dedication. Her journey began in childhood and flourished at Port Townsend High School, where she choreographed for assemblies, musicals, the flag girls, and the Rhody Parade drill team, designing costumes and cultivating school spirit. After graduating in 1955, she continued serving school and community programs, demonstrating an early commitment to mentorship and leadership through the arts and establishing a foundation that would influence decades of students to come.

While Fort Worden housed the Juvenile Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Joan volunteered countless hours teaching and choreographing for resident girls, sewing costumes and preparing them for a performance at the Fort Worden Theatre. For many, it was their first time on stage. The pride and confidence they gained reflected Joan’s gift for helping others feel valued, capable, and seen, and revealed her belief that dance could transform lives as much as entertain audiences.
In 1965, after choreographing the spirited “Can Can” for the Rhododendron Festival traveling show, enthusiastic community response inspired her to found Joan's Dance Studio. What began in her basement grew into a cherished institution. Over the next 50 years, thousands of students studied tap and ballet under her guidance. Annual recitals became treasured traditions, and each spring her basement transformed into a costume workshop as she personally sewed most outfits. Joan never turned a child away, quietly providing scholarships and teaching four generations the discipline, confidence, and joy of performance while creating a welcoming space where students found friendship and belonging.

In 2005, she launched Fantabulous Follies, inspired by the Palm Springs Follies. For a decade, this musical theatre troupe blended song, dance, and comedy, offering adults a chance to shine while raising funds for the PTHS Drama Department. Across decades, Joan’s artistry, generosity, and unwavering belief in the power of the arts strengthened community connections, showcased local talent beyond the studio walls, and left an enduring legacy of confidence, creativity, and community pride that continues to inspire performers and audiences alike.
