Hall of Fame: Jim Guthrie – Teacher, Coach, Mentor

Jim Guthrie moved to Port Townsend in 1974, beginning a lifelong commitment to the community through service, craftsmanship, education, and mentorship. He first established himself as a builder, co-founding Rainbow Homes before starting Guthrie Construction. Jim took pride in building, remodeling, and maintaining homes, viewing quality housing as an important form of community service that strengthened the fabric and stability of Port Townsend.

By the mid-1980s, Jim shifted his focus to education. Already coaching volleyball at Port Townsend High School, he earned his teaching credential from Western Washington University and joined PTHS in 1987, beginning a 27-year teaching career that continued until his retirement in 2014. He taught carpentry, stagecraft, history, and diversified occupations, reflecting the adaptability required in a small-school environment. His philosophy emphasized respect, kindness, and opportunity, believing students succeed when they feel supported and valued.

Beyond the classroom, Jim was deeply involved in student activities, believing extracurricular involvement played a key role in long-term student success. Over the years he coached volleyball, basketball, track and field, softball, and cheerleading, often stepping in where needed. He also coached Knowledge Bowl, leading teams to four state championships and reaching the state tournament every year during his tenure, fostering academic curiosity, teamwork, and confidence.

Jim was equally devoted to the arts, working closely with the drama department by mentoring students, supporting productions, and building sets. As advisor to the Rotary Interact Club, he encouraged leadership, service, and civic responsibility. Within the district, he served in leadership roles in the teachers’ union, advocating for educators and supportive working conditions.

Since retiring in 2014, Jim has remained active in the community, continuing to support the PTHS Drama Program, Saltfire Theatre, and organizations such as the Centrum Foundation for the Arts. He also continues construction and home projects, maintaining his lifelong commitment to service.

Jim’s guiding message is to build and protect a culture of kindness. Through decades as a builder, teacher, coach, mentor, and community leader, Jim Guthrie has left a lasting mark on Port Townsend, strengthening its schools, enriching its culture, and uplifting generations of students.
